Watergate Remembered:
The Downfall of Richard Nixon

August 9, 2024-September 2025

Richard Nixon Website Header

The June 17, 1972 break-in at the Democratic National Committee Headquarters in Washington D.C.’s Watergate Complex sparked one of the largest political scandals of American history. In the two years following the break-in, a complex web of political schemes and corruption within the Nixon Administration and his re-election campaign came to light. The Watergate Scandal eventually resulted in the indictment of over 40 government officials and the resignation of President Richard Nixon.

On August 9, 1974, Richard Nixon became the first and only president to resign from office in light of the Watergate Scandal. Fifty years later, this exhibit looks back at the scandal, the investigation, and the ultimate downfall of America’s 37th President.
