Dexter is an original series that aired on Showtime from 2006 to 2013. It is based on a book called Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay, of the same premise. On the surface, Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) lives a stereotypical life – he is in a committed relationship and has a steady job working at Miami Metro Police Department. However, his past hides a dark secret: when he was a child, his mother was murdered right in front of him. This led to the creation of what Dexter calls his “dark passenger,” who drives Dexter’s compulsion to kill. Following a code set out by his father, Harry Morgan, Dexter tries to kill only other murderers, making him a vigilante of sorts. The series follows Dexter’s escapades; each season usually focuses on one serial killer, often putting Dexter in direct competition with the police force. He has to balance his secret life and his normal life, all without getting caught. Although Dexter himself narrates the show, it features an ensemble cast. His sister Debra Morgan (Jennifer Carpenter), who also works at Miami Metro, is prominently featured, as well as Dexter’s wife Rita (Julie Benz), their children, and other members of Miami Metro’s homicide department. Throughout its run, Dexter was nominated for 147 awards, winning 37. Dexter’s series finale had over 2.8 million viewers upon its premiere; weekly viewership averaged above 6 million during the show’s run. Michael C. Hall won a Golden Globe for his performance in 2010, and was nominated every year between 2007 and 2011. Merchandise:
